Waste management at Hyperdome

As part of our commitment to reducing energy, water and waste consumption by 20% by 2020, a range of projects are underway, including the implementation of a pilot robust waste management system at Hyperdome in Logan, QLD.

From November 2017, Hyperdome has been progressively implementing a variety of distinct recycling streams to increase the diversion percentage of the Centre's waste from landfill.

Since the introduction of the new streams, Hyperdome has seen a dramatic increase in the percentage of waste diverted from landfill, from a 21% diversion in FY 16/17 to a 30% diversion in FY 17/18.

With the diversion rates consistently sitting around mid-30% since last November, the upcoming introduction of organic recycling is expected to increase the diversion percentage even more significantly.

A significant factor in the success of these new recycling streams was a strong relationship and ongoing engagement with Hyperdome's retail partners around the program and expectations, including:

  • large signs for the loading docks that educate and inform staff of their responsibilities in discarding of waste properly
  • formal communication between Hyperdome's Operations Team and retailers
  • regular informal and ad-hoc follow up engagement
  • once the implementation of an organic waste recycling stream is finalised, Hyperdome plans to continue to engage and train staff, as well as utilise the full capability of compacter's weighing technology, to target those retailers they need to work with to achieve further increases in diversion percentages.

As part of the commitment to this program, Hyperdome has appointed a Waste Management Champion, Operations Administrator Nicole Wellburn, who says the results to date are really positive.

"We've been very happy with our diversion results so far, and we look forward to further improvements when our results for organic diversions come through."
Nicole Wellburn, Operations Administrator
