Sons and Daughters of the West

Watergardens Town Centre's partnership with the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation is growing as they continue to support the delivery of the original Sons of the West program (SOTW), alongside their support for two new valuable programs introduced in 2018.

Sons of the West

Watergardens is proud to continue to support the Foundation in delivering their successful SOTW program - an initiative that aims to build the profile of physical and mental health in men through the activation of community support.

In 2018, Watergardens hosted its second Health and Wellbeing Day, providing family entertainment, healthy cooking and living demonstrations and activations, successfully encouraging a significant number of signups for the SOTW program.

52% of residents of Melbourne's West are classified as obese or pre-obese, and 50% don't meet dietary guidelines, providing an opportunity for the SOTW program to educate locals on making healthy choices, all the while aiming to break down barriers to participation and access to assistance that so often prevent men from addressing health issues in their own lives.

Daughters of the West

Alongside their support of the SOTW program, Watergardens became the inaugural partner for Daughters of the West (DOTW) - an offshoot of the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation's original initiative.

The DOTW program proved extremely popular, with its first class filling to capacity within a matter of weeks. With the aim of educating and broadening local women's knowledge about health, fitness and mental wellbeing, 100% of this year's participants graduated.

Watergardens Walkers

Watergardens recently partnered with SOTW graduates to deliver the Watergardens Walkers, a program that builds on the work of the SOTW and DOTW to raise the profile of physical and mental health in men and women by encouraging graduates to continue leading a healthy life and engage in a brisk weekly walk.

Held every Thursday at 7pm, the 30-minute in-Centre walk is led by SOTW graduate Terry Charles and provides exceptional opportunities for local community members to not only make new friends but fulfil their health and fitness goals.

Watergardens Town Centre Senior Marketing Manager, Julie Watson, said the Watergardens Walkers is a fantastic program to help keep up fitness, form new friendships and ensure that those who have already graduated from the SOTW and DOTW programs continue to meet their health goals.

"The Watergardens Walks is a rewarding program for our local community, giving people a wonderful opportunity to keep active while within a safe environment that is out of the elements," Ms Watson said.

"Walkers join a motivating group of like-minded people that, above all, encourage each other to keep active, healthy and happy."
