Community Pantry

The Little Community Pantry Project

In September 2016, Noosa Civic in Queensland launched The Little Community Pantry, a community donation point facilitating contributions of non-perishable food products for those in need in the local community.

Delivered in partnership with REAP Sunshine Coast, a regional arm of the successful food rescue organisation OzHarvest, the initiative encourages people to contribute to ‘The Little Community Pantry’ by either collecting an extra food item during their shop, or donating surplus unopened food items from home.

REAP Sunshine Coast Chapter Coordinator, Michele Lipner, said the new initiative provides great benefits for the local community.

“I am thrilled REAP Sunshine Coast is entering into this wonderful partnership with Noosa Civic, in a true example of locals helping locals,” Ms Lipner said.

The community has warmly embraced the initiative, with one to two trolley loads of donations being collected each week for distribution.

Inspired by the success of the Little Community Pantry, Sydney’s Castle Towers and Bundaberg’s Hinkler Central have established their own food donation points for their local communities.

Hinkler Pantry

‘The Hills Community Pantry’ was launched in December 2016, encouraging customers to leave contributions of household goods and services for those in need, with proceeds donated to long-term Castle Towers community partner ‘The Sanctuary’, a woman’s refuge providing crisis accommodation for women and children living in Sydney’s northwest suburbs.

The program has received overwhelming support from the Castle Towers community, with more than 1,000 individual donations of brand new items made during the December 2016-January 2017 period.

The Hinkler pantry is a roving pantry within the Centre, collecting donated goods for the Anglican Parish of Bundaberg to use for their emergency relief hampers or weekly soup kitchen, and the Bundaberg community has welcomed the initiative, generously providing around a trolley load of donations each week.
